Blog 3: Resumption of soccer a BIG MISTAKE?!

Welcome guys today we are going to discuss if at all restarting football leagues in Brazil was a good idea after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Brazil Situation-

Brazil has the second-highest death toll in the world after the United States after losing over 45,000 people since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the number of cases is still rising rapidly.

Still, the government has given a green light for football to start in the South American Nation and the clubs don't seem to be happy about it. Campeonato Brasileiro Série A's first game after almost 3 months was played between Flamengo and Bangu where Flamengo beat Bangu 3-0. The match took place at the Maracana Stadium which is just meters away from the Hospital which is set up for treating COVID-19 Patients.

Legend's say on this-

Brazilian legend Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima said “I am against the return of Carioca football and Brazilian football given the situation the country is in right now,” Ronaldo said during an event in Madrid. “Brazil is following the examples of other countries in Europe but it isn’t taking the pandemic into consideration.” He later added, " I think Brazil is still at a peak and thinking about having football back is a mistake.”

Top Brazilian clubs such as Flamengo, Botafogo and Fluminense came out against the start of the league saying it was too soon. Flamengo and Bangu who were supposed to play the first match after the restart protested outside the stadium before the match, saying the authorities were putting their lives in danger.

Players had their temperatures checked before the game started and where sent through a disinfection tunnel. The match started with a minute of silence for the victims of COVID-19. Brazil's National Championship was due to start in May but was suspended. Just after the restart of Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the league was again suspended as there were many protests and most of the club refused to play which made the authorities to suspend it until the month of July.
