Blog 14: Significance of Women's Sports in INDIA

HISTORY

It was in the early 1900s when sporting activities and club life was introduced in India which found a serious place in female lives due to facilities provided. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the Health Minister in India first set the example for North Indian women by taking them to competitive tennis. The efforts of such personalities like The female sensation in badminton Saina Nehwal and other sportswomen such as Karnam Malleshwari, Anju Bobby George, PT Usha, Sania Mirza, Mary Kom, PV Sindhu have yielded fruits in the Indian society. They have created great history and the upcoming talent will also continue to emerge as the best and take India at the top again.

INSPIRATION TO OUR NATION

Saina Nehwal- "The Golden Girl of Indian Badminton", The former World Champion has won over 21 International titles which include the biggest super series titles. She was ranked 2nd in 2009 but later became the International Badminton Champion in 2015. She has also been awarded Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.

Mary Kom- "Magnificent Mary", The 5 time World Amateur Boxing Champion and the only women boxer to have won a medal in each of the 6 world championships. She established herself as the Most Successful Indian Tennis player throughout her career as she is the third Indian women to win a Grand Slam Title. She has also been awarded Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

Indian Mentallity

Only 29% of the Female population in India take part in physical activities and sports compared to Men which is 49%. Even if they are a step ahead, a number of factors ensure that sportswomen stay two steps behind. Indian society is firm with the belief that women are naturally inferior to men because of the faith that their duty is bound only to birthing and taking care of her family though the Indian culture looks up to women as equivalent to God. The level of sports and physical education for females has been hampered because of endless imitations and untter nonsense. Their glory is a fight against discrimination and prejudice. It is disappointing to see the contrast in men's and women's sports in India.

The real challenges which turn into hurdles for sportswomen in India are lack of professional practice area, professional coaches and equipment. So even is a lot of girls show huge potential in sports during school and college, finally give up finding no there option. The potential resources are there but all they need is a good support from their country and its citizens.

ITS NATIONAL SPORTS DAY TODAY AND I WANT EVERYONE OUT THERE TO ENCOURAGE EACH WOMEN TO ACHIEVE HER GOAL IF SHE WANTS TO ACHIEVE THE MARK OF A SUCCESSFUL SPORTSPERSON.
